What is an access panel and where is it used?

What is an access panel?

An access panel can be either plastic, metal or plasterboard and is a door used to access, cover or protect mechanical or electrical systems. Often used in a wall or ceiling in a commercial building.

They’re very versatile, as they can be fire rated, acoustic rated, airtight, watertight and manufactured to your desired size.

Where is an access panel used?

As mentioned above, access panels are very versatile. They can be used in rooms such as; Bathrooms: back of faucets, under bath plumbing and shower mixing valves. Kitchens: under sink plumbing, shut off valves, cooker hood ducting. Living area: Concealed TV, network and telephone cables. Gas & electric: metres, security systems and junction boxes.

However, not recommended for external use.

Which access panel should I choose?

  • Plasterboard door – these types of access panel can be plastered and painted over, which will do a fantastic job of concealing both the door and frame.
  • Metal door access panels – these access panels have a removable flush metal door, are easy to handle. They offer excellent security while still being relatively lightweight.
  • Plastic access panels – these panels provide cost-effective and easy methods of reaching wall voids. The framing is designed to be sealed directly onto a structural opening, with the door being easily removable.
  • Picture frame panels – these can be fitted into existing ceilings or walls. There is a 25mm frame which surrounds the access panel edge, hence the name. These are available in both plasterboard and metal.
  • Beaded frame panels – these panels have a beaded edge, which allows room for plastering up to the door edge, thus concealing the frame entirely. These access panels are also available in both metal and standard plasterboard.
